Specifying shades for a school or a campus

Five decisions, and the one that actually costs schools money.

Specifying window treatments for a school or a campus comes down to five decisions: cordless or motorized where children are present, glare control on projection and screen surfaces, durability and standardisation so a damaged unit is a stock item rather than a project, operable parts built to the architect’s hardware schedule rather than to a rule of thumb, and an install planned backwards from a break rather than forwards from a purchase order.

Cords, first

Where young children are present, the Consumer Product Safety Commission's position is that the safest option is cordless, because eliminating the cord eliminates the hazard rather than reducing it. In a K-12 building that belongs in the specification rather than in a preference conversation — it should be written into the schedule so that whoever places the order cannot accidentally value-engineer it out.

For gymnasium clerestories, two-storey commons and stairwell glass, a motor is usually the practical route to cordless: a spring lift nobody can reach is a shade that stays where it is for a decade. Motorized systems.

Glare is the actual classroom problem

Not brightness. A classroom needs to stay bright — it is a room where people read. What it cannot have is sun on a projection surface, on an interactive display, or across thirty screens at once.

That points at a solar screen at a tighter openness in a darker fabric: it cuts glare hardest and keeps the view out, which matters more in a room full of people than anyone expects. Where a room genuinely has to go dark for projection, that is a second layer rather than a darker screen — and it is the case a dual roller was made for. Two rolls on one bracket.

Residence halls: standardise it

Student housing has a different brief again. Students sleep at unusual hours, so room-darkening or blackout earns its place; and something will be broken every year, so the specification that matters is the one that makes a replacement a stock item.

Uniform sizes, one fabric, one header across a building. Four years later, one unit gets replaced and it matches. That is worth more over the life of the building than any per-room optimisation, and it is where a workroom that keeps the record beats a franchise reselling a catalogue that gets revised annually. Operable parts and the hardware schedule

We will not quote you an operable-part height or a reach range off a website as though it were the requirement. Those are the architect's call on your project, they live in the schedule and the specification, and we build to them — and we will flag anything in the schedule that will not work at the actual opening, which is the useful thing a fabricator can do at submittal stage.

Two things worth writing into the specification

Cordless, in words, not as an assumption. It is the most common thing to be lost between design and purchase, and it is the one with a safety consequence rather than an aesthetic one.

A named fabric and header, plus the record of what went where. Buildings outlive the people who specify for them. Four years on, the useful document is not the drawing set — it is the schedule saying which fabric and which header profile is in which room, so a broken unit is a re-order rather than an investigation.

Education has the tightest and most predictable install windows of any sector we work in: a summer, a winter break, a spring break, sometimes one weekend on one wing. We plan backwards from that date rather than forwards from the order — and if the fabrication lead time does not fit the window you have given us, we will tell you before you commit rather than after.
