Motorized shades you never have to reach for

Remote, app or voice — and a handheld on its own is a complete answer.

A motorized shade replaces the chain or the cordless lift with a quiet motor in the tube, operated from a handheld remote, from an app, or by voice through a compatible control hub. It earns its place on glass you cannot reach, in a child’s room where there should be no operating cord at all, across a run of patio doors, and on rooms that need the shade down before the afternoon sun arrives. On an ordinary reachable window, a cordless lift is a complete answer.

When a motor is worth it

Glass you cannot reach

A two-storey stairwell window, a transom over a door, a gable in a great room. A shade you need a ladder to operate is a shade nobody operates, and the room stops getting what it was bought for.

Nurseries and children's rooms

The Consumer Product Safety Commission's position is that the safest option where young children are present is to go cordless, because a cord that is not there cannot form a loop. A motor has no operating cord at all. More on cord safety in a nursery.

Rooms on a sun schedule

A west room needs the shade down before the sun arrives rather than twenty minutes after somebody notices. On a schedule that happens whether or not anyone is home.

Walls of glass and patio doors

Eight shades operated one at a time is eight things nobody does. One control that moves a whole elevation is a different room.

And when it is not

On an ordinary bedroom or living-room window that gets operated twice a day and is easy to reach, a cordless lift is simpler, has nothing to charge and nothing to pair, and does the same job. We would rather say that here than sell you a motor you will resent. The longer version of this argument.

The motor is the same. What changes is where its power comes from — and that is a decision about your walls, not about the shade.

Battery

A rechargeable motor lives inside the tube. No electrician, no wall to open, and it installs like a manual shade — which is why it is the retrofit answer. It gets charged a few times a year, and on a sun-facing window a small solar panel can keep it topped up.

Plug-in

A slim lead from the end of the tube to an outlet near the window. Nothing to charge; a visible cable, so it suits some windows and not others.

Hardwired

The feed disappears into the wall above the head and never needs charging. It is an electrical decision that has to be made before the drywall goes on, so it belongs to a remodel, a new build, or a commercial fit-out. Commercial and fit-out work.

How you actually operate them

A handheld remote is a complete answer and we offer it as one — plenty of our customers never connect the shades to anything, and there is nothing wrong with that. An app on your phone and voice control both run through a compatible control hub, and which voice assistant works depends on the system specified at the quote. We will tell you what a given arrangement can and cannot do before you buy it rather than afterwards.

Motorized drapery, not just shades

Motorizing a dual shade

Both rolls of a dual day-night shade can be motorized, together on one control or separately on two, so one press can lift the blackout and leave the front fabric where it is. See dual day-night shades.

Can you motorize what I already have?

Sometimes. It depends on the tube diameter, the brackets and how wide and heavy the fabric is, and it is a question we answer by looking rather than over the phone. If the existing shades are the right generation it can be a straightforward swap; if they are not, we will say so rather than fit a motor that will struggle.

Are motorized shades a good idea in a child’s room?

Yes, and it is one of the strongest reasons to motorize.
