What a classroom shade is actually for
It is worth separating, because the specification follows from it. A classroom is not a room you darken — it is a room people read in, and taking the daylight out of it makes it worse rather than better. What has to go is the sun on a projection surface, on an interactive display, and across a room full of screens.
That points at a solar screen at a tighter openness in a darker fabric: it stops the direct sun and the glare hardest while keeping the room bright and keeping the view out, which matters more in a room with thirty people in it than anyone expects. A light fabric reflects more heat but scatters more light inside, which is usually the opposite of what a room full of displays needs. Where a space genuinely has to go dark for projection, that is a second layer rather than a darker screen.
Cords do not belong in a school
The Consumer Product Safety Commission's position is that where young children are present the safest option is to go cordless, because eliminating the cord eliminates the hazard rather than reducing it — the alternatives, like shortening cords or anchoring continuous loops, only reduce it. In a K-12 setting that is a specification decision rather than a preference, and it should be written into the schedule rather than left to whoever is ordering.
For high or inaccessible glass — a gymnasium clerestory, a two-storey commons, a stairwell — a motor is usually the practical way to get cordless without leaving the shade permanently in one position. See motorized shades.
Specified to your hardware schedule
We build to the specification and the hardware schedule, not to a rule of thumb. Operable-part heights, clear floor space and reach ranges are the architect's call on your project, and we will not quote a dimension at you off a website as though it were the requirement — we will build what the schedule says and flag anything in it that will not work at the actual opening.

Durability, and the unit that fails in year four
A school building outlives four or five generations of the people specifying for it, and the failure that costs money is never the install — it is the shade that gets broken in a residence hall in year four and cannot be matched, so a floor ends up with one unit that does not look like the others, and then two.
The answer is standardisation and a record. One fabric, one header profile, uniform sizes wherever the openings allow it, and a workroom that keeps what went in and where. Because we manufacture rather than resell, that record is ours to keep rather than a catalogue's to revise — and a replacement four years later is a re-run of something we made, not a search for a discontinued part number.
The same logic applies to hardware. Chain and cordless mechanisms are the parts that wear in a building where a shade is operated by a different person every hour, so on high-traffic openings we would rather specify a heavier mechanism than a lighter one and have it argued about at submittal than replace it in year three.

Education has the tightest and most predictable install windows of any vertical we work in — a summer, a winter break, a spring break, sometimes a single weekend on one wing. We plan back from them rather than forward from the purchase order, and if the fabrication lead time does not fit the window you have given us, we will say so before you commit rather than after.
