Do you actually need motorized shades?

Four times a motor earns its place — and the more common case where it does not.

Motorize when the window is hard to reach, when there should be no cord at all, when a run of glass makes operating shades by hand impractical, or when the shade needs to move on a schedule. Outside those four cases a cordless lift is a complete answer: it is simpler, there is nothing to charge and nothing to pair, and it does the same job on a window you can reach. Battery motors suit retrofits because they need no electrician; hardwired suits a build or a remodel because the walls are already open.

Four times a motor pays for itself

“Pays for itself” here means it earns its place in daily use, rather than any claim about energy or payback.

Glass you cannot reach

A stairwell window, a transom, a gable. If operating it means fetching a ladder, it will sit in one position for years and the room will never get what the shade was bought for.

Children's rooms

The safest window covering with young children is one with no operating cord at all, which is the CPSC's own position. A motor gets you there without giving up the ability to move the shade. Cord safety in a nursery.

Walls of glass and patio doors

Six or eight shades operated one at a time is six or eight things nobody does. One control that moves a whole elevation changes how the room gets used.

Rooms on a sun schedule

A west room needs the shade down before the sun arrives, not after somebody notices the glare. On a schedule that happens whether or not anyone is home. West-facing windows.

And when it does not

On an ordinary bedroom or living-room window that you can reach, that gets operated twice a day, a cordless lift is a complete answer. Nothing to charge, nothing to pair, nothing to replace in eight years, and the same clean look with no cord hanging. Most windows in most houses are this window. We would rather say so than sell you a motor you end up resenting.

What a motor does not fix

Worth saying, because a motor is often bought to solve something it has nothing to do with. It will not make a room darker — the edges and the header decide that, and a motorised shade leaks light in exactly the same places a manual one does. It will not make a badly measured shade fit. And it will not stop a solar screen being the wrong answer at ten at night; that is a second fabric, not a second control.

What it fixes is use. A shade that is easy to move gets moved, and a room only gets the benefit of a window treatment on the days somebody operates it. On a window you already operate twice a day, that problem does not exist.

The motor is the same. What changes is where its power comes from — and that is a decision about your walls, not about the shade.

The one that catches people out is hardwired. It is not an upgrade you can add later without opening a wall — it is a decision that belongs to the framing stage.

Remote, app or voice

A handheld remote is a complete answer and we offer it as one. Plenty of people do not want another app and there is nothing wrong with that.

App control and voice control both run through a compatible control hub, and which voice assistant works depends on the system specified at the quote. We will tell you what a given arrangement can and cannot do before you buy it.

Can you motorize what you already have?

Sometimes. It depends on the tube diameter, the brackets, and how wide and heavy the fabric is. If the existing shades are the right generation it can be a straightforward swap; if they are not, a motor will struggle and we will say so rather than fit one. It is a question we answer by looking rather than over the phone.
