Getting to you from the workroom

Canton is about 29 miles from 50 Frank Blvd, Akron, OH 44313 — roughly a 30-minute drive south, traffic allowing. Stark County. There is one workroom and a designer who drives; nothing about your job is handed to a territory owner or a subcontractor.

Ridgewood, and the windows in it

The Ridgewood Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in December 1982. It is a residential district of architect-designed early-twentieth-century Revival houses — Tudor, Georgian and French Norman — with the majority of its significant buildings erected in the single decade between 1920 and 1930, and it still has its original brick streets and locally produced streetlights.

A decade of architect-designed Revival houses is a specific thing to measure. It means leaded and multi-light casements as well as double-hung sash; it means deep plaster reveals and substantial wood casing that you do not want to cover with an outside mount unless there is a reason; and it means arched heads and bay windows often enough that we go and look rather than quote from a description.

Where a wood cornice earns its place

This stock is also the best argument for a built cornice we have. A painted wood cornice with proper returns, made to the opening and painted to the existing trim, lets a plain modern roller shade sit under 1920s millwork without either of them looking wrong — and it closes the light gap over the roll at the same time. Downtown, and what actually gets reviewed

The Upper Downtown Canton Historic District, listed on the National Register in June 2006, is a commercial district built out between 1875 and 1949 along Market Avenue — Late Victorian and early-twentieth-century Revival commercial architecture.

Canton's Architectural Review Board issues certificates of appropriateness and reviews “exterior architectural features”, which its code defines as the architectural style and general arrangement of the exterior of a structure — and its jurisdiction is limited to the downtown Special Improvement District. If you are working on a downtown commercial frontage, that is the body to speak to. If you are in a residential Revival house on a brick street, it is a different question, and the honest answer is to ask the City rather than to take ours.

What a custom shade actually changes here

The same three things, wherever the house is. It fits the opening you have rather than the nearest stocked width, which is what decides how much light comes past the edges. The opacity is chosen against the orientation of the room rather than off a chart — a west-facing room and a north-facing one want different cloth. And the header is chosen for what the room needs at the top of the window, which is the part that decides whether a bedroom actually goes dark.

All three are decided in the room, at the window, with the tape out. That is why we drive to Canton rather than sell from a counter, and it is the whole reason the consultation is a visit rather than a phone call.
