Getting to you from the workroom

Cuyahoga Falls is about 13 miles from 50 Frank Blvd, Akron, OH 44313 — roughly a 17-minute drive north, traffic allowing. Summit County. There is one workroom and a designer who drives; nothing about your job is handed to a territory owner or a subcontractor.

Berkshire Park, and the 1920s again

The Berkshire Park Historic District — a residential neighbourhood — was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2021, documented for Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and Prairie School architecture from a planned suburban development built primarily during the 1920s and 1930s.

Prairie School is the one that changes the job. Wide, horizontal banded windows with substantial wood mullions, casements rather than double-hung sash, and an architecture where the window is the composition — which means an outside mount that covers the frame does real damage to the room. In Berkshire Park we take the inside mount and solve darkness with channels or a cassette rather than by going wider. Tudor Revival brings leaded and multi-light casements with the same conclusion.

The downtown, and what the review board covers

The Cuyahoga Falls Downtown Historic District was added to the National Register in 2018: forty-eight buildings in One-Part and Two-Part Commercial Block styles, covering commercial growth from the city's incorporation in 1836 through to 1954, when retailers began relocating to shopping centres.

The city has had a Design and Historic Review Board seated in 2014, which reviews properties and areas nominated for historic designation and proposed alterations to them, with authority over demolition, construction and rehabilitation within a historic district by certificate of appropriateness. As everywhere, that is an exterior process and an interior-mounted shade is not an exterior alteration — and as everywhere, if you own a designated property and the job touches the outside, ask the Board rather than us.

Two districts, two different jobs

Worth separating, because the same city holds both. Berkshire Park is residential and 1920s to 1930s: casements, banded horizontal glazing, deep reveals and trim you do not want to cover. The downtown district is commercial and spans well over a century: shopfront glazing, upper-floor windows over retail, and mounting conditions that are as much about the building as about the room behind them. We measure the two the same way and specify them very differently.

The rest of the city

Cuyahoga Falls is large and varied, and a great deal of it is post-war and later: sliding patio doors onto a deck, wide rear-facing glass, and finished basements with high transom windows. Those are shade problems rather than drapery problems, and the sliding door is the one that most often gets covered badly. Roller shades cut to the opening.

The same three things, wherever the house is. It fits the opening you have rather than the nearest stocked width, which is what decides how much light comes past the edges. The opacity is chosen against the orientation of the room rather than off a chart — a west-facing room and a north-facing one want different cloth. And the header is chosen for what the room needs at the top of the window, which is the part that decides whether a bedroom actually goes dark.
