Custom Window Treatments in Hudson

Getting to you from the workroom

The green, and the sash around it

The Hudson Historic District — roughly bounded by College, Streetsboro, South Main and Baldwin Streets — was added to the National Register of Historic Places in November 1973, and it is documented for Greek Revival architecture with high-style Victorian examples among it.

Greek Revival sash is a distinctive thing to work with. The openings are tall and comparatively narrow, the muntins divide the glass into many small lights, and the casing is often the best thing in the room. That last point drives the mount: an outside mount that covers beautiful original casing is usually the wrong trade in a house like this, so we work harder to make an inside mount go dark — side channels, a cassette or a built cornice rather than simply going wider. The order to fix light leaks in.

Before you change anything on the outside

Hudson takes preservation seriously: any project that replaces building materials or changes the appearance of a historic structure requires City approval, and the Architectural and Historic Board of Review issues the certificates of appropriateness to construct, alter, remove or demolish structures and landmarks within a historic district.

Interior-mounted shades and interior cornices are not a change to building materials or to the appearance of a structure in that sense — but Hudson is exactly the town where it is worth a phone call rather than an assumption, and it is the City's call rather than ours. Ask them before you order if there is any doubt.

And the newer half of the town

Hudson is not only the historic district. A great deal of the housing is later and larger, with two-storey great-room glass, gables, and windows over stairwells that nobody can reach. That is the strongest case for motorization we see anywhere in this market — not as a luxury, but because a shade you need a ladder to operate is a shade that never moves. Motorized shades.

What a custom shade actually changes here

The same three things, wherever the house is. It fits the opening you have rather than the nearest stocked width, which is what decides how much light comes past the edges. The opacity is chosen against the orientation of the room rather than off a chart — a west-facing room and a north-facing one want different cloth. And the header is chosen for what the room needs at the top of the window, which is the part that decides whether a bedroom actually goes dark.
