Getting to you from the workroom

North Canton is about 23 miles from 50 Frank Blvd, Akron, OH 44313 — roughly a 28-minute drive south, traffic allowing. Stark County. There is one workroom and a designer who drives; nothing about your job is handed to a territory owner or a subcontractor.

A company town, and the decade it doubled

North Canton was established by German settlers on 19 February 1831 as the Village of New Berlin, and changed its name to North Canton in 1918 amid the anti-German feeling of the First World War. The town that grew up around it is on the National Register twice over for the same reason: the Hoover Company Historic District at 101 E. Maple Street — the vacuum-cleaner company's headquarters and factory complex, with a period of significance running from 1900 to 1974 — and, south of town on Easton Street, the Hoover Farm, an 1853 farmhouse listed in 1979.

The housing that matters most for our purposes came later. North Canton's population went from 7,727 in 1960 to 15,228 in 1970 — it very nearly doubled inside a decade — and a town that doubles in ten years is a town where most of the houses were built in ten years.

What a single-decade housing stock means

Consistency, which is genuinely useful. Openings tend to be square, standard and repeated: the same double-hung unit six times in a house, the same sliding patio door, the same shallow reveal. That makes a run of matched shades straightforward and it makes a replacement years later far more likely to match — provided somebody wrote down what went in, which is one of the things a workroom does and a catalogue does not.

The constraint we watch for is reveal depth. A 1960s frame often has just enough room for an inside-mounted roller and not enough for an inside-mounted cassette, which decides where the header goes and therefore how dark a bedroom gets. Which header does what.

North Canton is not Canton

Worth stating plainly, because it causes real confusion: North Canton and the City of Canton are separate municipalities with separate governments, and Canton's Architectural Review Board has no authority here.
