Custom Window Treatments in Westlake

Westlake is about 42 miles north-west of our Akron workroom — the longest ordinary drive we make, and one we make regularly. Roller shades, day-night blackout shades, motorized shades, custom drapery and painted wood cornices, cut and sewn on Frank Blvd and installed by our own crew.

Getting to you from the workroom

Westlake is about 42 miles from 50 Frank Blvd, Akron, OH 44313 — roughly a 47-minute drive north-west, traffic allowing. Cuyahoga County. There is one workroom and a designer who drives; nothing about your job is handed to a territory owner or a subcontractor.

Mostly postwar, with a few genuinely old exceptions

Westlake was called Dover Village until 1940 and did not incorporate as a city until 1957. Its population went from about 3,200 in 1940 to 5,500 in 1950 and 15,989 by 1970 — which tells you almost everything about the housing: the great majority of it is postwar suburban, and a large share of it is much later than that again.

The exceptions are worth knowing about because they are so unlike the rest. The Clague House, an Italianate structure built in 1876, is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And the Lilly Weston House on Center Ridge Road, now city-owned, was put up around 1844 from sandstone blocks two feet thick, finely tooled and dressed on the front, with a brick wing added around 1850.

What we actually meet on a Westlake job

Square openings, standard sizes, and modern frames with modest depth — so the question is rarely whether a shade will fit and almost always how much light comes past its edges, and how a wide patio slider or a two-storey foyer window gets covered without a treatment nobody wants to operate. Where light actually gets into a bedroom.

The drive, honestly

Forty-two miles each way is a real drive and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is entirely normal for us on a whole-house job or a run of windows, and we do it regularly — but if you have one small window and you are in Westlake, we will tell you honestly on the phone whether we are the right people for it rather than drive out and then say so.

What a custom shade actually changes here

The same three things, wherever the house is. It fits the opening you have rather than the nearest stocked width, which is what decides how much light comes past the edges. The opacity is chosen against the orientation of the room rather than off a chart — a west-facing room and a north-facing one want different cloth. And the header is chosen for what the room needs at the top of the window, which is the part that decides whether a bedroom actually goes dark.

All three are decided in the room, at the window, with the tape out. That is why we drive to Westlake rather than sell from a counter, and it is the whole reason the consultation is a visit rather than a phone call.
