Room-darkening vs blackout, and why the edges matter

The fabric was probably fine. It was the edges.

Room-darkening and blackout describe how much light passes through the cloth. Room-darkening cuts most of it and leaves a soft glow; blackout stops essentially all of it. Neither makes a room dark on its own, because the light that actually bothers you comes around the edges rather than through the middle. A roller shade mounted inside the opening is cut narrower than the opening so it can roll, which leaves a gap down each side by design, and an open roll leaves the head open too. An outside mount with a generous overlap, side channels, and a cassette or cornice over the tube are what turn blackout fabric into a dark room.

Why your last blackout shade disappointed you

It is worth saying plainly, because almost nobody says it before the sale: the fabric was probably fine.

The shade is narrower than the opening

A roller shade has to roll. If it were cut to the exact width of the opening it would rub the jambs, wander on the tube and eventually crease. So an inside-mounted shade is cut narrower — a fraction of an inch each side — and that clearance is a permanent, designed gap that light comes through at exactly eye height when you are lying down.

The top is open unless something covers it

An open roll has nothing above the fabric but the tube and the brackets. Light coming in at a shallow angle goes over the roll and down the wall. In a bedroom, this is usually the one that wakes you.

Both of these are normal, both are fixable, and nobody tells people about them before they buy. That is the whole reason this page exists.

The order to spend money in

If a room has to be dark and the budget is finite, this is the sequence that gets the most darkness per pound spent, and it is almost the reverse of how it is usually sold.

First the mount: taking the shade outside the opening with a real overlap costs nothing extra and removes the largest light source in the room. Then the header: a cassette or a cornice over the roll closes the second largest. Then side channels, if the room faces the sun at the hour that matters. And only then the fabric — upgrading from room-darkening to blackout while the shade is still inside-mounted with an open roll buys you the smallest improvement of the four, for the most money.

Which one do you actually need?

Bedrooms

Room-darkening is usually enough. It takes out the streetlight and the early sun and leaves a soft glow at the edges that most people sleep straight through. Spending up to blackout and then mounting it inside the opening gets you a more expensive shade with the same three lines of light.

Nurseries

Blackout, and deal with the edges — a nap happens in daylight, so the gaps matter more here than in any other room. Nurseries and cord safety.

Media rooms

Blackout with an outside mount or channels. A screen loses to reflected daylight long before the room feels bright to you.

Living rooms

Usually neither. Light-filtering or a solar screen is the right answer, and if the room has an evening job as well, that is what a dual roller is for.
